On Saturday night I was lucky enough to get a red carpet pass to the MOBO Awards in Liverpool at The Echo Arena with the fabulous Freya team!! Freya were backstage in the VIP area with their amazing travelling Freya Bra Booth handing out lingerie goody bags, bra fittings and underwear advice to the stars and their dancers. Talk about bras for the stars!
I have to say deciding what to wear was a slight drama – even in my role as a personal shopper for My Style Companion! I had been so busy with personal shopping appointments with clients that (as usual) I had no time to work out my own outfit (the hazards of being a personal shopper I’m afraid). However I pulled out my favourite AW12 McQ feather dress by Alexander McQueen and decided that was a winner – I wanted to go for a more relaxed urban ‘red carpet’ vibe rather than the usual glitz and glamour. However at the end of summer I wore this dress with nude peep toes and a nude blazer and realised that at minus three degrees, I may need something warmer for my feet and arms seeing as I would be standing next to the River Mersey!
As the MOBOs were in Liverpool, I decided to stay over at my folk’s house and on the way stopped off at Trafford Centre (my second home) and picked up a leather jacket from Zara and a pair of funky wedge boots and a black clutch from Dorothy Perkins to finish off the outfit – I was in and out in 30 minutes (the perks of being a personal shopper!) and on my way to the show!
I met my good pal Clare in town – it was absolutely freezing by the docks but I was too excited to care. We picked up our red carpet and backstage passes and headed over to the red carpet to await the arrivals of the stars! The noise level from the ‘screamers’ was off the chart – I guess I have forgotten what it was like to be 13, but to be fair, I was just as excited as they were (even if my screams weren’t quite as deafening!)
We’d only been there about 10 minutes and we were alerted to the arrival of the fabulous Misha B looking absolutely stunning in a floor length, black sequin gown with a daring mesh plunging neckline! I have to say, Misha B’s performance later on that evening was one of my favourites of the whole show!
Next up followed the uber cool Labrinth – I think a little scream slipped out at that point from myself and Clare! The man just oozes cool and later went on to win ‘Best Song’ after a stunning performance of ‘Beneath Your Beautiful’ and ‘Earthquake’ that had us up on our feet, dancing up a storm.
Soon after followed Letitia – the Winner of this years’ Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model looking (obviously) drop dead gorgeous in a mini sequin dress where we debated whether the 32DD bust size model was wearing Freya’s Deco strapless bra which is available up to a GG cup.
Next up was legend Dionne Warwick who sauntered down the red carpet trussed up in a long black fur coat – Dionne definitely had the right idea with a big coat as by this point, I couldn’t feel my fingers anymore (it was totally worth it though to see such a legend close up). Later on we saw Dionne backstage as she effortlessly sashayed past us as we were eyeing up the yummy looking yellow and black MOBO cupcakes, and let’s be honest here – we totally gushed how fabulous she was as she very politely humoured us! Sorry about that Dionne, although I guess you’re used to it!
Following Dionne on the red carpet came Emile Sandé wearing a classic little Miu Miu number in this season’s must-have wine colour that matched perfectly with Freya’s Rosie set, who then went on to have an amazing night winning the award for ‘Best Female Act’ and ‘Best RnB / Soul’. Clare and I also decided to award Emile our award for ‘Best Hair’, followed closely by Tyler James from talent show The Voice.
Next up was Rita Ora in an amazing white Mugler dress fully equipped with AW12′s most popular structure, the peplum. As if I didn’t already have the biggest girl crush on Rita, my obsession developed when she later showcased Dress No. 2 when she won ‘Best Newcomer’- a frothy, floral, fun tulle number by McQueen. With her signature red lip, the instant paring was made in my head with Freya’s Deco Honey range in that same lipstick shade and I only hoped she dropped by the Freya Bra Booth to take a look!
Next up Tyler James, Jessica Metcalf, Georgie Porter and Lauren Pope arrived but by this point, I have to be honest, I was holding out for JLS who did not disappoint in their coordinated on-trend tweed looks. A shy Conor Maynard followed and by this point ‘the screamers’ were nearly passing out, having just seen JLS immediately followed by Conor who both performed their new singles later in the show.
The highlight of the night though came when 90s sensation TLC’s T-Boz and Chilli (I was so obsessed when I was a teenager!) walked down the red carpet with Stooshe who performed their cover of TLC’s Waterfall at the show’s finale. Chilli literally had not aged a day since that Waterfall video! Life is so unfair!
Later on came Scouse Powerhouse Rebecca Ferguson – very much the vintage glamour puss – and I couldn’t help but think that Freya’s Carys set would be up Rebecca’s street in terms of style with it’s vintage print. Gold Medallist Nicola Adams also strolled down the red carpet shortly after Rebecca – smile beaming as always – styled in a tee, black pants, high tops and black blazer.
After the red carpet we sat and watched (and danced along at) the awards show after being backstage briefly for a cup of tea (rock ‘n’ roll I know!) watching Trevor Nelson get ready for his set. The fashion, famous celebs, the fans, the freezing cold weather and of course Freya made it a night to remember for this humble blogger! Now there’s one for the scrapbook! Thanks Freya!
