Thanks for contacting the Bra Doctor.
The Gem half cup is not padded, it has a single layer of material.
It sounds like you might benefit from a bra fitting to ensure you're wearing the correct size. Why not visit your nearest Freya stockist and ask our fitting consultant for a bra fitting to ensure you get the right size, shape and style for your bust.

The majority of the Freya range are adjustable a reasonable length along the strap. Click here to look at the Deco, Lauren or Gem.
It may be that if the back of the bra is riding up too high this is causing you to tighten the straps. The back strap of the bra should sit below your shoulder blades.
Please see here for your nearest Freya stockist where one of our professional fitters will ensure you are wearing the correct size and a style that suits you.
I will pass your feed back on to the designers as to how popular and in demand the Rio Bra is in Nude.
See here for the Gem which has been based on the Rio fit. You may find this a suitable alternative.
It is very difficult to tell your true size from measurements because they are found to be around 70% incorrect. We would recommend going to your nearest Freya stockist to be professionally fitted. Find your nearest store here.
Alternatively we have a size guide and bra fitting video that demonstrates how to properly fit a bra here.
The Freya Active Underwired Moulded Sports Bra has slide hook fastenings at the back - either 3 or 4 hooks depending on the size. It also converts to a racer back if desired.
Our sister site Leia has images for the back which you can view here.
A UK 30J is equivalent to a US 30M, conversely a US 30J is equivalent to a UK 30GG. This could be where the confusion is arising.
If you normally purchase a UK 30J and this fits then I would stick to this size for Freya. If you are looking to purchase lingerie on a US website then the equivalent would be 30M.
It could be that the back is too small and you need to go up to 32. When wearing a bra it should be tight and it will often leave a mark (similar to when you wear socks they leave a mark) however it should not hurt nor leave big red marks.
Alternatively if the cup is too small this will dig into the sides which can be quite painful.
I would recommend returning to the store and asking them to refit you to ensure you have been fitted correctly.
If you would prefer a different fitter you can always find your nearest Freya stockist here.
